This video is part of a BMJ Learning module on infection control. For this and other Covid-19 related content, visit: new-learning.bmj.com/covid-19
The personal protective equipment (PPE) required will depend on whether you have direct patient contact and whether you are carrying out an aerosol-generating procedure. There is further detail on this in the BMJ Learning module but the guidelines for managing patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 have been changing rapidly and we advise that you check these regularly for updates.
An FFP3 or N95 mask is needed for aerosol-generating procedures, in combination with a full length, long sleeved gown (rather than apron), hat, visor, and long cuffed gloves.
The correct order for donning (putting on) PPE is as follows:
Apron
Face mask
Eye protection
Gloves
The order for doffing (removal of) PPE is:
Gloves, then hand hygiene
Apron or gown
Eye protection, then hand hygiene,
Surgical face mask or FFP3 respirator, followed by hand hygiene
