If a patient is under investigation for an airborne infectious illness the respiratory therapist should adhere to Standard, Contact, and Airborne Precautions. This includes placing patients in an airborne infection isolation room, if available; effective hand hygiene (soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer); and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
